We’ve had a lot of requests for tangerine coloured kangaroo paws recently and this week they are back in stock! We had good numbers of Anigozanthos ‘Landscape Tangerine’ - a hardy, large growing form with beautiful flowers on tall stems - arrive this morning with most plants already in bud.

Banksias are a great option for winter colour in the garden and are always popular with the local pollinators. We have a big range of hardy east coast varieties in stock this week (and more on the way!) plus some amazing WA species if you are after something a little different in a perfectly drained spot.

Varieties in stock this week include the hardy local coastal banksia B. integrifolia (groundcover, compact shrub, narrow and tree forms), B. spinulosa (a range of compact and shrub forms + var. collina) and several select B. ericifolia forms.

New natives in the nursery this week include the striking Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’. This distinctive hybrid features large spikes of mauve pink flowers and bronze new growth. Grows large enough (2m x 2m+) with a bushy, dense habit to be an excellent medium to tall native screen - but can be easily kept smaller if required as a stand-alone feature with light pruning - which also encourages the attractive new growth.

Hakea ‘Burrendong Beauty’ is one of our favourite winter flowering natives. This beautiful hybrid hakea features a stunning display of red/pink and white flowers on a low spreading/mounding shrub.

‘Burrendong Beauty’ does well in a full sun position with well drained soil in SE NSW - images here are of a young plant starting to flower in a client’s terraced garden we built and maintain near Narooma.

In stock this weekend - the stunning Banksia spinulosa ‘Honeypots’. This hardy compact native shrub is a little larger growing than other dwarf B. spinulosa varieties and can be used alongside other smaller forms - like ‘Birthday Candles’ and ‘Coastal Cushion’ - to create a spectacular rockery display in autumn and winter. The flower spikes are also larger than most other dwarf forms and can reach over 200mm in length.

We have a big range of hardy east coast banksias in stock this week - from dwarf and groundcover forms through to larger shrub / small trees. We also have selection of WA banksias in our Collector’s Corner if you want to try something a little more unusual.

New stock in our Collector’s Corner this week includes the unusual Western Australian Banksia dryandroides. This compact shrub features attractive foliage that resembles a dryandra (as they were know before they were all renamed as banksias!) plus dainty orange/brown/yellow flower spikes.

This WA banksia can do well on the east coast in a sunny spot with good drainage (images here are garden plants growing and flowering near Corunna, NSW). Native potting mix is the perfect addition to any soils that are either too heavy or ‘hungry’ sands. All of the WA species in our Collector’s Corner have been selected for local conditions - we’ve grown them all to flowering in the garden!

In stock this week | Gastrolobium (Brachysema) praemorsum ‘Brown Butterfly’ is an unusual native ground cover which features dark bronze/brown leaves and striking red pea-like flowers. This hardy sprawling form can be grown in well drained soils in both full sun and part shade - we often use this distinctive plant in native garden projects to provide contrast foliage colour in dappled light areas around larger shrubs or under trees. ‘Brown Butterfly’ appreciates a good prune after flowering - which will bush up the plant nicely.

We currently also have a range of other interesting Gastrolobiums in stock including the low-growing ‘Lemon Drops’ (with pale yellow flowers) and the unusual G. sericeum ‘Black form’ which features dark burgundy/black flowers.

Trigger plants (Stylidium) are beautiful and interesting small Australian wildflowers which are increasingly being enjoyed by gardeners as new cultivated forms become available. They are known as ‘trigger plants’ because of the unusual flowers which feature a column that is triggered by visiting insects and then springs upwards to deposit pollen on the head or back of the pollinator.

We have two select forms in stock this week : Stylidium Dinosaur Grass ‘Raptor’ (40cm x 40cm) and the slightly more compact Stylidium Dinosaur Grass ‘Pinkasaurus’ (25cm x 25cm). Both varieties form neat mounts of attractive grassy foliage with spikes of pink flowers a feature in early spring. Their neat habit and delicate flowers mean they are equally at home in native or cottage gardens - they are also an interesting option for pots.

New in the nursery this week - Banksia spinulosa ‘Coastal Cushion’. This outstanding dwarf form is one of the best small banksias with a slightly larger and more robust habit than ‘Birthday Candles’ and masses of flower cones in winter. It naturally forms a neat, mounding shrub and is very hardy in local conditions.

Other banksias in stock this week include the larger growing B. spinulosa ‘Bold and Gold’ (2m x 2m) which makes a very attractive low screen with striking yellow flowers and several new B. ericifolia forms. We also have a nice range of WA banksia species in out Collector’s Corner if you want to try something a little different.

Grevillea synapheae (catkin grevillea) is a beautiful WA species which features masses of creamy flowers from mid-winter to mid-spring. Low growing forms in particular are a great option for rockeries and raised beds where they can be easily shaped into attractive mounding shrubs. Can do really well in local conditions in a full-sun spot with an appropriate native soil mix - images here are garden plants flowering near Corunna, NSW (flowering in August).
